Motorcycle Accident Cape Coral – An accident that occurred on Old Burnt Store Road near Cape Coral on Thursday afternoon resulted in the death of a motorcyclist. At approximately noon, a 70-year-old woman from Cape Coral was driving a 2023 Hyundai Kona in a southbound direction on Old Burnt Store Road South as she approached the junction with Southwest 1st Street, as reported by the Cape Coral Police Department. She halted her vehicle in the center median as she waited for the traffic heading north to clear so that she could turn left onto Southwest 1st Street.
Ion Dumitru, 58 years old, was riding his 2007 Yamaha XVS11M motorbike northbound on Old Burnt Store Road South as he approached the intersection of Southwest 1st Street in Cape Coral. The woman who was driving the Hyundai informed the CCPD that she was under the impression that traffic heading north had cleared, so she turned left by crossing the travel lane heading northward, and she did not see the oncoming motorcycle. Heavy braking caused Dumitru to slide for approximately 91 feet.
He attempted to escape the collision by veering to the right, but he was unsuccessful. The front bumper of the Hyundai collided with the left side of the motorcycle, which caused the rider to lose control of the bike, causing it to rotate counterclockwise and land on its right side. Dumitru was ejected and landed approximately 51 feet to the north of where the crash occurred. Dumitru was pronounced dead at the site, despite the fact that attempts to save his life had been made.
The driver of the Hyundai had injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, and she was sent to the hospital by ambulance. According to the CCPD, neither alcohol nor drugs, nor speed, played a role in this collision.
