M49 motorway UK, Accident – Following a’serious’ incident on the M49, National Highways has established diversion routes. The incident, which occurred just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday (April 4), is thought to have involved two vehicles and has resulted in a road closure on the highway. The M49 southbound is congested following the closure, which is located between the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and the M5 at J18. BristolLive has reached out to Avon and Somerset Police, who are on the scene alongside Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

“M49 Southbound closed substantial delays, queueing traffic due to serious accident, two vehicles involved from M4 Prince Of Wales Bridge J22 to M5 J18,” according to traffic monitoring system Inrix. Congestion at M5 J17 (Cribbs Causeway) due to individuals unable to exit at J18A. By 14:05, the road was closed.” National Highways South West has issued a warning about ‘significant delays’ in the area surrounding the crash.

“The #M49 in #Gloucestershire is now closed southbound between the #M4 J22 and the #M5 J18 due to a significant @aspolice led incident,” it said in a tweet. The #A4/#Avonmouth is also inaccessible from the #M5 southbound at J18. Long delays are to be expected.” Highways has built up a diversion route around the crash site. “The M49 in Gloucestershire is closed southbound between the M4 (J22) and the M5 (J18) owing to an Avon and Somerset Police-led incident,” the statement reads.

“All emergency services are present, including the Dorset and Somerset Flying Ambulance.” National Highways Traffic Officers are also on the site to help with traffic control. As a result of this event, the A4/Avonmouth is also closed from the M5 southbound at J18.”
