Katherine Deaton Obituary, Death – Katherine Hunter Deaton The 6th of May, 1954 till the 25th of March, 2023 Located in Sumter County, South Carolina, After a valiant battle against Parkinson’s disease that lasted 31 years, Katherine Hunter Deaton, MD, passed away on March 25, 2023 in Sumter, South Carolina, at the age of 68.

On May 6th, 1954, Katherine entered this world in Columbia, South Carolina. She was raised in Sumter for the majority of her youth, but she also spent time in England, Spain, France, and West Germany because her father served in the United States Air Force and was stationed all over the world. She graduated from Wilson Hall High School in Sumter in 1972, where she excelled as a student athlete and was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the varsity basketball and varsity softball teams during her time there. Katherine attended Converse College and graduated in 1976 with degrees in biology and chemistry.

During her time at Converse, she was a member of Gamma Sigma, which is Converse’s highest academic award, as well as Mortar Board, which is a national honor society for college senior women. She graduated from Emory University in 1978 with a master’s degree in Anesthesiology and Life Support Systems and was qualified to work as a master’s level physician’s assistant in anesthesia; nevertheless, she made the decision to pursue her lifelong desire of becoming a physician instead. After finishing the Master of Public Administration program at Emory, she enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine program at the Medical University of South Carolina and graduated with that degree in 1982.
