Greg Zabel Obituary, Former Bosco Catholic School Coach Dies

Greg Zabel Obituary, Death- Gregory A. “Greg” Zabel, 59, a Waterloo, Iowa native and resident, died on Monday, April 10, 2023, at MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center. He was born on November 1, 1963, in Sumner, Washington, to Glen and Marcella Gaede Zabel. He was Glen and Marcella’s son. He received his diploma from Fredericksburg High School in the year 1982.

On November 27, 1982, Greg marries Debby Scott in a ceremony at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Hampton. The wedding was 35 years ago. He was a farmer his entire life and also a high school basketball coach at Don Bosco and Tripoli for more than 15 years, where he coached both male and female students. Greg was a member of the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association and was active in the organization’s operations.

Left to cherish his memories include his wife, Debby Zabel of Waterloo; two sons, Jamie (Jessica) Zabel of Ankeny and Tim (Jessica) Zabel of Independence; three grandchildren, Emma, Lily, and Mason; his mother, Marcella Zabel of Fredericksburg; two brothers, Russ (Lori) of Northfield, MN, Dan (Pam) of Fredericksburg; one sister, Deb Gruenberg of Sumner; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and nephews. Glen, his grandfather, and one of his nephews, Brandon, had both died before he was born.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, located at 705 Main Street in Cedar Falls, Iowa 50613, on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. This will be followed by the deceased person’s interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in New Hampton. Visitation will be held on Monday at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo, Iowa 50701, from four o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening. In addition, there will be one hour of visiting at the church prior to the start of the funeral service.

Donations in memory of the deceased can be donated directly to the family, who will use the funds to establish a memorial fund in their loved one’s name.
