Eury Chang Obituary, Death – Eury Chang’s family and friends on their loss. Eury, a theatrical performer and scholar who was born in Vancouver, finished his Master of Arts in Theatre Studies with us back in 2013, and shortly after that he started his PhD candidacy. His dissertation was fervently devoted to addressing the dearth of documentation of the significant contributions made by Asian Canadian playwrights to the professional theater in this country. This was the topic of his doctoral research.
In addition to serving as a sessional faculty member in our division, Eury was an active participant in the Public Scholars Initiative, which is housed under the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Before entering the field of education, Eury held positions in the non-profit arts sector as a professional writer and editor, performance dramaturge, and tour manager. Also, he was a member of the peer jury for the British Columbia Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the City and District of North Vancouver.
On March 15, just days before he passed away, Eury was awarded his PhD on compassionate grounds. This was due to his extensive list of academic accomplishments as well as the level of completion of his dissertation. We will miss him terribly because he had a wonderful personality and was a notable artist as well as scholar. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
